to facilitate informed and active participation in government.
Recent Studies
League studies are used to develop positions, which are then used as the basis for our advocacy.
2010 Study for enhancing LWVUS policy on election reform

In the summer and fall of 2009 we conducted a study to develop criteria for advocacy on any proposed incorporation. As a result of that study:
- We had a list of questions to apply to any proposed incorporation.
- Subsequently, we answered those questions as they applied to the proposed incorporation of Carmel Valley in order to take a position on the proposal.
In early 2009 we participated in a National study on the National Popular Vote Compact. A video of the consensus meeting is available online.

In 2007 we conducted a local study on Water Ownership - Public versus Private and created a new position on this issue.
In 2006 we completed our participation in a statewide study to update the LWV of California energy position. The following were background information articles to prepare for the study:

The following are studies conducted in the recent past:
- At the LWV of California Convention in May 2003, the delegates voted for an update of our state
Education position,
last updated in 1985, pending funding. In early 2005, the League of Women Voters
of the Monterey Peninsula participated in this statewide education study.

Guides were provided by the LWV of California to
prepare for the 2004-2005 study.
- Our League also participated in a statewide study on Community Colleges in 2003.
The final position was arrived at through a collation of viewpoints from
all participating California Leagues. The wording of the final

was approved by the League of Women Voters of California
Board of Directors and League delegates to the state convention in May 2003.
- In response to the November 2002 election results to potentially dissolve the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, the League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula was engaged in an update to our local water position. For background information, read an article that appeared in the March 2003 issue of our newsletter, the VOTER, on "Controlling Water - Public, Private, or Other?" Our updated Water Position was approved at our Annual Meeting in May 2003.
