LWVMP members will hear about the award winning New Voices for Youth (NVFY) program from Kathleen Weisenberg and Lisa Frederiksen Bohannon from LWV of South San Mateo County.  NVFY brings high school students from diverse backgrounds to work with the League and community mentors to create videos on issues of importance to local young people.

New Voices for Youth (NVFY) strives to encourage student civic engagement by giving students a voice through broadcast media.  The opportunity to learn the ins and outs of movie making draws students to the program.  Students attend a 16-hour production training program at the Media Center in Palo Alto (paid for by NVFY) where they learn everything they need to know to produce a television show.

Once trained, students work in teams of 8 to 10 students in weekly meetings at their local high school or college campus to create new shows. They agree to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours per month.  Current videos in progress include "Redevelopment in East Palo Alto" and "ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Raids in Redwood City."

Kathleen Weisenberg is a past national director of the LWV.  Lisa Frederiksen Bohannon is a consultant and a presenter for the National Women's History Project.  She is the author if six books including "Failure is Impossible! The Story of Susan B. Anthony" and "Women's Rights and Nothing Less: the Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton."

The New Voices for Youth program is funded solely by grants and donations from individuals and community organizations. Funding efforts are coordinated by the Education Funds of the LWV of South San Mateo County and LWV Palo Alto.
