LWVMP President's Message

I want to begin my last message to you as President by telling you about some important things that have been happening. At our last Board meeting we approved sending three delegates to the State Convention in Bakersfield May 18-20. We approved a position on public v. private ownership of water, with which you'll be asked to concur at the Annual Meeting. And we decided to oppose GPU4 (we had previously decided to support CGPI).

But we have been kept the busiest preparing for the election on June 5, when the voters will decide between the Community General Plan Initiative (CGPI), put on the ballot by 15,000 voters in Monterey County, and the General Plan Update Number 4 (GPU4), approved by the Board of Supervisors.  We prepared two comparisons of CGPI and GPU4, one five pages long, one two pages, in both Spanish and English. We've talked to the editors of the Monterey County Herald and the Monterey County Weekly and given them our comparisons and a written commentary about why we're supporting the CGPI and opposing the GPU4. We prepared an article for the "Commentary" section of the Herald, which was published on April 15. And on Sunday, April 22nd, we held a forum at the Monterey City Library, where we'll be presenting our comparison of the two plans and explaining how we arrived at our positions.

It's the end of another League year, and time to make our plans for the next year. League members previously received the Call to the Annual Meeting. I hope you can come to this meeting, even if you aren't usually able to attend. It's an important time-we set the budget for 2007-08, we set the tone and direction by retaining or deleting positions, and we elect our Board for the next year. And if that isn't enough, we'll hear Delaine Easton speaking to us about the challenge of education in today's world. It promises to be an interesting meeting.

This is my last message to you as President, and I want to thank you for the privilege of serving in that office. It's been two years of learning for me, learning again how the League works, learning again how important what we do is, learning again how much respect (most of) the public has for us. And learning again what a great group of ladies and gentlemen we have leading our organization and working at all levels. I'm constantly awed by how much gets done and how willingly. Whenever there has been work to be done, there has always been someone happy to do it. Thank you for that, and thank you again for letting me serve you in my small way. It's been (mostly) a joy.
