LWVMP President's Message
This is a busy and exciting time for our League. Why? I'm glad you asked.
Private and Public Ownership of Water If you were at the February general meeting, you heard the committee's presentation on their findings. Please come to the Unit Meeting on Wednesday, March 7th, to discuss the topic and come to consensus. This is the heart of League, the way we arrive at our positions. The more who participate, the better.
March General Meeting Dr. Clara Yu, the president of MIIS, will speak at this meeting. She is a stimulating speaker and will continue the theme of education started in January with John Mott Smith. Our May Annual Meeting will conclude that theme when we hear from Delaine Easton, former California Superintendent of Schools.
Registering Voters The Voters Service Director and her committee are working with the Peninsula high schools to make sure all students who are eligible to vote in the June election have the opportunity to register. It's a California law that all schools must provide that opportunity, and most of them welcome our help. This is an important function of the League, and we're pleased to be able to help.
Sunshine Week Finally, Sunshine Week, March 11-13, is fast approaching. This is the third year of national recognition of the importance of transparency and freedom of information in government. Sunshine Week seeks to enlighten and empower citizens to play an active role in their government at all levels, and to give them access to information that makes their lives better and their communities stronger. We haven't determined our participation yet it may just be a letter to the editor but watch the Monterey Herald for items of interest, whether from the League or otherwise.
