The President's Message
This past month the League has been busy with voter service and voter education. We’ve held “Pros & Cons” and we’ve moderated candidate forums. Candidates have called us and asked for our forum schedule so they could be sure it was on their calendar.
We’ve written a letter to the editor about the propositions (although as I write this it has yet to appear). And on election day we’ll be staffing a polling place, the Community Center in Pacific Grove, as a fundraiser for the League and as a service to the community.
The state League is putting a lot of effort into passing Proposition 89, the Clean Money proposition. We’re hoping to get the Monterey County Herald to print an article of support on the Commentary page. We have posters to put up and post cards to mail.
How can you help? Let me know if you are willing to sign your name to post cards and address them to your friends in California. These post cards are urging people to vote “Yes on Prop 89”. Suggestions like this from friends and acquaintances are obviously more effective than ads and editorials.
We also have posters to post in places where a lot of people will see them. If you’re willing to do either of these things, give me a call—649-0335—or call the our local League number—646-8643—and someone will see that you get these items immediately.
Come to our next luncheon on November 8, the day after the election. By then we will know how effective our efforts have been. The meeting’s subject is timely: LWVMP efforts to have local communities enact campaign finance reform ordinances.
