The VOTER, September 2006, Volume 79, No. 1

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Last month I told you some of the things our board and committees have been doing over the summer. Things didn’t slow down in August. We monitored getting the General Plan Update (affectionately or frustratingly—depending on your point of view—known as GPU4, it being the fourth update) out to the libraries for public viewing. We’ve continued monitoring the on-going discussions of the proposed campaign finance reform ordinance in Pacific Grove, the civic center in Monterey, the County’s Butterfly Village proposal, and the selling of Bay View in Seaside.

As I write this, we haven’t had our August Board meeting. However, at that time we plan to review our Nonpartisan Policy, which you can find in your Handbook. Our policies require that we review it every year, but this year it becomes particularly important, as it is an election year. Our members are political and very interested in elections by definition, and several of our board members expect to be involved in local campaigns this fall. We’ll be talking about how to do that without exposing the League to charges of partisanship.

This is a good time to remind you that all meetings of the Board and of the various committees are open to all League members. The Handbook tells you when the Board and our various committees regularly meet. The Voter also gives you meeting dates. You’re welcome to attend any and all. It would be good to check with the chair, however, in case a meeting date or time gets changed. And it is the chair’s prerogative to limit discussion from non-members, depending on the agenda limitations of any given meeting and the matters being discussed.

We’re off to a great new League year with our September meeting. Hope to see you there.

— Marilyn Maxner, President
