The VOTER, May 2006, Volume 78, No. 8

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I look back on my first year as your president, I can't believe how fast it went. I'm so very impressed by the knowledge and expertise of our board members. I'm always amazed by what the different portfolios accomplish

When a letter needs to be written, the Director chairing the appropriate portfolio writes it with the help and advice of her committee. As the public voice of the League, I sign the letters. But it's the directors and committees who do the work. And elected officials, public agencies, and boards listen.

When we hold candidate forums or present pros and cons, our Voter Service committee works hard. But they are also hard at work in between elections. The big project right now is registering high school seniors to vote, if they wish, when they turn 18. The state requires that all schools give all seniors voter registration materials; however, many of them are unable or unwilling to do so and are happy to see the League come forward to see that it happens.

When state or national action by Leaguers is requested, many of you respond with letters, calls, and emails to our legislators. And they listen. Sometimes ours is the only outside voice they hear, and that voice carries weight.

And then there are the Board members who keep the League going administratively. Ours is one of the best VOTERs in the state; our web site is up-to-date and easy to navigate; our financial books are in good order; our publicity goes out in a timely manner each month; calls to our telephone answering machine and emails to us are handled by our Vice President; our meeting records are available to anyone who wants to see them.

Thank you for giving me the privilege of serving as your president this past year.

Marilyn Maxner, President
