THE PEOPLE SPEAK 2005
Last October our League and the Monterey Bay Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA cosponsored an event for The People Speak. Our topic was "Ending Global Poverty: The Opportunity of a Lifetime."

Thanks for participating in The People Speak 2005! Since 2003, The People Speak program has provided a forum for people around the world to engage in informed discussions about important international issues. 2005 was the biggest, most exciting season yet for The People Speak.
This year's theme, Building a Safer World: Defining the U.S.-U.N. Relationship for the 21st Century, allowed participants to discuss a wide range of issues. Discussions covered four main areas:
- Poverty, Hunger, and Health--34%
- War and Conflict--28%
- Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism--21%
- The Environment--17%
Some of the key figures from 2005:
- More than 13,000 events were held in 2005, a significant increase from the 3,000 events in 2004;
- Over 300 colleges and universities organized events;
- Events were held in all 50 U.S. states; and,
- People in 46 countries and five continents partici-pated in and hosted The People Speak events.
Participants also made the theme their own by discussing issues affecting them, ranging from avian flu and climate change to nuclear proliferation and poverty alleviation.
