THE (local) LEAGUEs OF WOMEN VOTERS RECOMMENDS
NOVEMBER 8, 2005, SPECIAL ELECTION
The Leagues of Women Voters
of the Salinas Valley and the Monterey Peninsula
urge a "NO" vote on Measure C.
- Rancho San Juan, which would allow construction of 4,000 homes, large-scale commercial and industrial development, hotels, and a golf course, is the largest project ever approved in Monterey County.
- It would not address the affordable housing crisis with homes averaging $530,000.
- The Board of Supervisors approved it without knowing the full impact the project would have on traffic congestion, water supplies and local services and over the objections of the County Planning Commission.
- Five organizations sued the County over the adequacy of the environmental analysis including CalTrans and the City of Salinas.
- It would generate over 70,000 new daily vehicle trips on local roads and highways that are already congested with no significant relief in the near future.
- It would overtax existing groundwater supplies, which are already jeopardized by seawater intrusion and bad water quality.
- It would convert 2,500 acres of farmland to urban sprawl between Salinas and Prunedale east of Highway 101 and would create the equivalent of a new city one-half the size of Marina.
- It would destroy existing land forms requiring extensive cut and fill - up to 5.6 million cubic yards - and allow building on ridge lines and slopes over 30%.
- Urban sprawl costs taxpayers more in services than revenue generated. We cannot afford this kind of development.
- More than 20 changes to County General Plan policies were required to approve the project. Voting No on Measure C means that General Plan Amendments accommodating Rancho San Juan would be rescinded.
Vote with the League. Vote NO on Measure C.
