MEETING THE CHALLENGE

Our League has decided to participate in a League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) endeavor called, "Meeting the Challenge." Its purpose is to strengthen our League through sustained membership growth and to plan and implement practices that strengthen our work and increase our presence in the communities we serve. If we attain the goals we have set for ourselves we will be able to retain the per member payment due to the LWVC for all our new members for the coming year. For our League that will be a minimum of $230.00-a substantial sum for our own League work.

We must grow by at least ten members to a total membership of 199. That makes it very important to gain new members but also to retain our current members. So when it is time to renew your membership, we trust you will eagerly do so.

We want to increase our presence in the community through further work with the public access television station, AMP. This endeavor includes becoming an AMP sponsor, working to secure a seat on their board of directors and establishing a working relationship with their directors.

The LWVMP will extend its action endeavors through a concerted letter-writing campaign about the Rancho San Juan development. You will hear more about this from our Natural Resources Committee. And we will increase the success of this effort through work with the Salinas Valley League.

In that 46 percent of the citizens of Monterey County are Hispanic, we want to provide voter service to more of the Spanish speaking community. We plan to translate our Facts for Voters into Spanish and develop a distribution plan so that it will have an impact with Hispanic voters. Another component of our voters service will be outreach to several senior center sites on the Monterey Peninsula.

Additionally, we want to offer the opportunity for members to participate more fully in the support of our League. Through a new dues structure, it will be easier for you to contribute beyond your basic membership. You will see these changes in the next renewal envelope you receive.

It will be exciting to strengthen our work through an enhanced television audience, more voters service outreach, a sustained action campaign, and a more robust financial status. And, it will be wonderful to add members who can help us attain our goals of an informed citizenry. We look forward to your help in implementing these Meeting the Challenge goals. If you have questions about any of the goals, please contact us.
