JANUARY ROE v. WADE AD
The LWVUS "believes that public policy in a pluralistic society must affirm the constitutional right of privacy of the individual to make reproductive choices." But the government continues to be pushed by anti-choice advocates to inappropriately interfere with difficult, private decisions that should be left to women and their doctors.
This January will mark the 32nd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, establishing that the constitutional right to privacy is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.
We have gone since 1994 without a Supreme Court retirement, the longest period since 1823 that we've ever gone without a vacancy. It is likely that at least two justices will retire; new appointments to the Sumpreme Court could potentially put Roe v. Wade in jeopardy
Roe v. Wade is not just about abortion. It is the underlying foundation for a woman's rights to be educated about family planning choices, to make informed, meaningful decisions about reproduction, and to have access to reproductive health care. Many Americans are unaware of the breadth and influence of the Roe v. Wade decision. We need to educate friends and family all over the county about the importance of defending this important right.
During the first week of January the Reproductive Rights Coalition (RRC), of which the LWVMP is a member, will be mailing out its request for donations and names for their annual signature ad in all the local papers.
Most League members are on the mailing list. If you do not receive a mailing--and you want your name to appear in the ad--please send your name and a contribution to RRC, P.O. Box 813, Monterey, CA 93942, before January 15. (RRC must have your official signature to use your name in the ad.) The RRC is suggesting a contribution of $20 to allow our voices to be heard.
