MEETING THE CHALLENGE
President's Message
The new year of 2003 has gotten off to a good start! Our January General Meeting, featuring Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch, was a definite success. Mr. Patton updated us on the current status of the Monterey County General Plan Update. While clarifying many of the difficulties in the struggle for its passage, he also made it clear that the majority of citizens throughout the county who spoke up on this issue have similar goals. These goals are embodied in the twelve guiding objectives which are the basis of the plan. His balanced and positive approach was inspiring, and we are lucky to have him at the helm of LandWatch.
Many thanks to Janet Brennan, Natural Resources Director, for organizing this program and to Jeanne Melaugh, Director of Luncheon Logistics, for her efforts. Attendance at our general meetings has been consistently high since Jeanne took on this position.
At our February General Meeting Janet Brennan will present another excellent program, a panel discussion on"Which Agencies Can Plan Water Supply Projects On the Monterey Peninsula?" See the calendar for details.
With the February meeting we will begin the process of updating our Water Position. The management of our water resources on the Monterey Peninsula is at a critical juncture with the passage of an advisory vote to dissolve the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) and the purchase of Cal-Am by a foreign corporation. It is important for our League to continue to take an active and informed position. Please join us in this endeavor.
