AMERICA IN THE WORLD

The League of Women Voters participated as an "alliance organization" in By the People, a major project of MacNeill-Lehrer Productions that aims to bring more citizens into a national dialogue about America in the world. The project kicked off from Philadelphia with the National Issues Convention - a town meeting with 350 citizen-delegates who comprised a carefully selected representative sample of the United States. League representatives were present. Jim Lehrer was the anchor of the two hour special broadcast on Sunday, January 12, 2003, highlighting this national conversation.

The By the People project is working with the LWVEF and other alliance organizations, including local public broadcasting stations, to undertake community dialogues on topics related to "America in the world" throughout 2003. The project has purchased for distribution at By the People events 2,000 copies of the League's new publication "A Citizen's Guide to Global Economic Policymaking." More details about how local Leagues can undertake or participate in community dialogues will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, League members are encouraged to check with their local PBS stations to find out when more important national conversations about "America in the world" will air in their communities.
