LUNCH AND LEARN WITH THE LEAGUE

TOPIC: REGIONAL WATER: GETTING BEYOND STALEMATE
The Regional Desal Project was moving forward in 2010. Major setbacks developed in 2011, leading to numerous non-disclosure agreements, secret meetings and mediation. As of early January 2012, very little evidence has emerged to suggest workable progress. Other ideas and options are gaining traction.
What happened, and does the future look like? Recent articles and opinion pieces have identified the water supply crisis having a deadline of 2016 and 2017. What does this mean? What are the trends? What is the fear if rationing occurs? All proposed remedies are based on these factors.
Janet Brennan, League of Women Voters representative throughout the Regional Planning process, will address issues that have led to the stalemate on water supply options for the Monterey Peninsula. Issues include lack of transparency; ignoring early warning signs; inadequate representation of ratepayers; and conflicts of interest. George Riley, Citizens for Public Water, intervener with California Public Utilities Commission, and League member, will identify ways to move forward to assure water supplies for the area. These include programs under development by the Monterey Peninsula Water Management Agency and Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency.LOCATION: : Unitarian Universalist Church, 490 Aquajito Road, Carmel, CA, and is open to the public.
