Dear Ms. Tulett:

The League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula wishes to thank you and your staff members, Claudio Valenzuela and Joe Ripley, for meeting with us on Monday, June 23, 2008. We initiated this discussion to clarify the ability of citizens to verify the Election Department's technological compliance with the law.

From our discussion, it is our understanding that the following will occur in the future:

  1. During election day observations, staff will show (upon request of observers with credentials) what programs are loaded into the Sequoia tabulation machines using the "add/remove programs" function listing all loaded programs and will perform the "ping" commend to verify that there is no connection of the computers to the internet.
  2. Staff will remove the Ballot Preparation System (PBS) software and MS-Access from the tabulation computers.

We appreciate your cooperation and help in addressing our concerns.

Sincerely yours,

Janet Brennan, President
League of Women Voters Monterey Peninsula
