Bill Wojtkowski, Director
Community Development Department
City Hall
Monterey CA 93940

Dear Mr. Wojtkowski,

Thank you for sending us the Notice of a Special Field Trip on Saturday, July 16, when the Council, Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, and Architectural Review Committee will review the story pole staking for the proposed Public Service Center.

The very brief period of time during which the story poles will remain in place is of serious concern. One weekend only, during summer visitor and vacation time, does not give members of the public an adequate opportunity to see the outlines of the new construction. Many may not be aware of the revised project or how it will fit into the City Center and surrounding area.

Since a number of issues have been raised in the long course of review for this major project, it is particularly important to maintain full public participation and confidence throughout.

Everyone should have a more reasonable time to observe the staking. If for some reason the 20-day period which would be required for a large residential project is considered to be infeasible, then the poles should be left up at least until the joint HPC and ARC public hearing on July 27.

The Monterey County Herald should also be given notice of the extended viewing period.

Please consider this recommendation.

Sincerely,
     Marilyn Maxner, President
