January 26, 2005 Hearing on Del Monte Forest Preservation and Development Plan

Dear Chair and Members of the Planning Commission:

The League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula has consistently urged Monterey County to seek certification of Measure A as a necessary prerequisite to any County action on the proposed project.  This matter has now been addressed by the California Coastal Commission.   A letter dated December 22, 2004, from Meg Caldwell, Chair of the Commission, states in part,

"The Commission therefore strongly advises that the County refrain from taking any final action on the Pebble Beach Company's CDP application until after it has submitted, and the Coastal Commission has acted on, the proposed Measure A LCP amendments, as required by law.  Similarly, the County should not take final CDP action until after the Coastal Commission has acted on any Spanish Bay CDP amendment request.   As our staff has advised the County on several previous occasions, the Coastal Commission strongly recommends that the County address proposed LCP amendments before conducting any further deliberations on the CDP application for the project."

The League urges the Planning Commission to defer action on the Del Monte Forest Preservation and Development Plan until the orderly planning process requested by the Coastal Commission is implemented.
