Subject: Energy/Environment

The League of Women Voters of the Monterey Pensinsula strongly urges you to oppose the final version of the energy bill that has emerged from the committee negotiations this week. This bill undermines existing environmental protections, makes global warming worse, and fails to provide for needed energy conservation measures.

The best interests of California citizens are negatively impacted as the bill fails to take affirmative steps to curb global warming that threatens to destroy coastal and agricultural land integrity and, in fact, will dramatically increase air pollution and global warming through huge new incentives for burning coal, oil and gas. In addition, the bill fails to provide for energy conservation -- the key element for any good energy policy.

We urge you to work towards developing policy that protects the safeguards of the Clean Air Act.

Sincerely,

Beverly G. Bean, President
League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula
