McCain/Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act (S.139)

Dear Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer:

The League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula strongly supports the bipartisan Climate Stewardship Act and urges you to vote in favor of this important first step to stem global warming by limiting greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions mandated in S.139 will have a significant impact on both national and international environmental issues. The Climate Stewardship Act will positively address the disproportionate contribution of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions into the earth's atmosphere and provide international leadership in stemming this contributing factor to global warming. Nationally, S.139 will address the negative health, economic and environmental effects of greenhouse gas emissions. Particularly relevant to the California economy and quality of life, the consequences of global warming resulting from greenhouse gas emissions include coastal destruction, increasing droughts and floods, disrupted growing seasons, and extinction of unique plant and animal life.

Programs to turn U.S. policy in the direction of environmental preservation must begin now. We urge you to vote in favor in the McCain/Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act (S.139).
