SUBJECT: MONTEREY COUNTY GENERAL PLAN UPDATE

Dear Supervisor Calcagno:

The League of Women Voters of the Monterey Peninsula and the Salinas Valley have participated in the development of the Draft Monterey County General Plan through numerous workshops and hearings. We have supported the Plan's guiding objectives, policies and action items as important elements for a sustainable future for Monterey County. We have also supported the focus on compact communities, city-centered growth, preservation of agricultural land, prevention of urban sprawl, provision of affordable housing and the need to address infrastructure deficiencies concurrently with new development.

Some of the proposed changes to the Draft General Plan that are to be considered on November 26 would jeopardize these basic approaches and undermine what the general public has clearly supported through this long and comprehensive planning process. We urge you to support only those changes that are consistent with the Draft Plans guiding objectives and policies.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Beverly Bean, President LWV/Monterey Peninsula
Kalah Bumba, President LWV/Salinas Valley
